Australian Shares End Lower as S&P/ASX 200 Drops 1.00% to One-Month Low
Australian equities ended Tuesday's trading session in negative territory, weighed down by declines in the Consumer Discretionary, Information Technology, and Financials sectors.
The S&P/ASX 200 index closed in Sydney 1.00% lower, marking a fresh one-month trough.
Among the session's top performers on the S&P/ASX 200, Mesoblast Ltd (ASX:MSB) advanced 4.04%, gaining 0.09 points to close at 2.32. Downer Edi Ltd (ASX:DOW) rose 3.87% or 0.25 points to finish at 6.71, while Metrics Master Income Trust Unit (ASX:MXT) climbed 2.92% (up 0.05 points) to 1.77 in late trading.
The worst laggards were Judo Capital Holdings Ltd (ASX:JDO), down 4.67% or 0.05 points to 1.02 at the close, Objective Corp Ltd (ASX:OCL), which fell 4.39% or 0.28 points to end at 6.10, and AUB Group Ltd (ASX:AUB), losing 4.24% or 1.24 points to close at 28.01.
On the Sydney Stock Exchange, decliners outpaced advancers by 638 to 434, while 388 issues closed flat.
Objective Corp Ltd (ASX:OCL) saw its shares hit five-year lows, falling 4.39% (down 0.28) to 6.10.
The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, an indicator of implied volatility for S&P/ASX 200 options, surged 13.29% to 11.97, reaching a new one-month high.
December gold futures declined 0.72% (down 32.21) to $4,444.39 per troy ounce. In other commodities, October crude oil futures gained 2.47% (up 2.26) to $93.74 a barrel, while November Brent rose 1.33% (up 1.29) to $98.29 a barrel.
The AUD/USD pair remained nearly flat at 0.72 (unchanged 0.08%), while AUD/JPY slipped 0.49% to 110.87.
US Dollar Index futures declined 0.34% to 98.82.
