Canadian Shares Close Lower; S&P/TSX Composite Drops 1.07%
Canadian stocks closed lower on Tuesday, as losses in the information technology, consumer discretionary and real estate sectors weighed on the market.
At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite Index was down 1.07%.
Among the best performers on the S&P/TSX Composite during the session were Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN), which rose 12.82%, or 1.51 points, to finish at 13.29. Ngex Minerals Ltd (TSX:NGEX) gained 10.33%, or 2.62 points, to close at 27.99, while Ero Copper Corp (TSX:ERO) advanced 8.46%, or 4.08 points, to 52.32 in late trading.
The worst performers of the day included Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP), which fell 7.84%, or 15.73 points, to trade at 185.03 at the close. Thomson Reuters Corp (TSX:TRI) declined 6.84%, or 10.00 points, ending at 136.24, and BRP Inc (TSX:DOO) was down 6.47%, or 6.02 points, to 87.04.
On the Toronto Stock Exchange, declining issues outnumbered advancing ones by 583 to 378, with 70 stocks ending the session unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, increased 7.28% to 14.30.
Gold futures for December delivery were down 1.65%, or 74.04, to $4,402.56 per troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities, crude oil for October delivery rose 2.96%, or 2.71, to $94.19 per barrel, while the November Brent contract climbed 2.34%, or 2.27, to trade at $99.27 per barrel.
The Canadian dollar was unchanged against the U.S. dollar at 0.73, and was also unchanged against the euro at 0.62.
The U.S. Dollar Index Futures slipped 0.29% to 98.86.
