India Stocks End Lower as IT, Real Estate and Metals Drag; Nifty 50 Sinks 0.57%
Indian shares closed lower on Monday, with sectoral declines in information technology, real estate and metals pulling the broader market down.
At the close on the National Stock Exchange, the Nifty 50 shed 0.57%, touching a fresh one-month low, while the BSE Sensex 30 lost 0.50%.
Among the top gainers on the Nifty 50, Apollo Hospitals Enterprises Ltd. (NSE:APLH) climbed 2.02%, or 175.00 points, to end at 8,825.00. Eicher Motors Ltd. (NSE:EICH) added 1.04%, or 79.50 points, to close at 7,710.00, while Tata Consumer Products Ltd (NSE:TACN) advanced 0.74%, or 7.50 points, to 1,017.50 in late trade.
The session's worst performers included Infosys Ltd (NSE:INFY), which tumbled 3.78%, or 42.70 points, to 1,087.30 at the close. SBI Life Insurance Company Ltd (NSE:SBIL) declined 2.42%, or 42.90 points, ending at 1,732.10, and Tech Mahindra Ltd (NSE:TEML) fell 2.40%, or 38.30 points, to 1,558.60.
On the BSE Sensex 30, the leading advancers were Larsen & Toubro Ltd (BO:LART), which rose 0.61% to 3,990.00; Bharti Airtel Ltd (BO:BRTI), up 0.60% to settle at 1,853.00; and Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (BO:MRTI), which gained 0.47% to close at 12,760.00.
The worst decliners on the BSE Sensex 30 were Infosys Ltd (BO:INFY), down 3.81% to 1,087.00 in late trade; Tech Mahindra Ltd (BO:TEML), which lost 1.96% to settle at 1,560.80; and Tata Steel Ltd (BO:TISC), which fell 1.85% to 185.50 at the close.
Market breadth was negative, with declining issues outpacing advancers on the India National Stock Exchange by 1,479 to 1,151, while 38 stocks ended unchanged. On the Bombay Stock Exchange, 2,273 stocks fell and 1,925 advanced, with 195 finishing flat.
The India VIX, a gauge of implied volatility for Nifty 50 options, rose 3.77% to close at 11.08.
In commodities, gold futures for December delivery declined 0.78%, or 34.96, to $4,441.64 per troy ounce. Crude oil for October delivery slipped 0.01%, or 0.01, to $91.47 per barrel, while the November Brent contract gained 0.44%, or 0.42, to trade at $96.70 per barrel.
In currency markets, USD/INR eased 0.05% to 94.43, while EUR/INR advanced 0.09% to 109.83.
The US Dollar Index Futures dipped 0.23% to 98.92.
