On Tuesday, JPMorgan began coverage of FedEx Freight with an Overweight rating and a $160 price target for December 2027, telling clients that the recent spinoff positions North America's biggest less-than-truckload operator to boost profitability and enhance service as an independent business.

Analyst Brian Ossenbeck noted that the unit had been hampered while operating as a small division within FedEx, the world's largest air-cargo carrier, and had ceded market share over time.

He believes the separation now gives FedEx Freight the flexibility to invest in areas necessary to elevate the customer experience.

"There is no quick fix for Freight, as it will take time to build a dedicated salesforce and migrate from legacy systems," Ossenbeck wrote, adding that he trusts management to maintain a best-in-class operation while closing the gap with pure-play rivals.

Ossenbeck characterized the service shortfall as "fixable, not structural," pointing out that FedEx Freight has been rated "Inferior" on the Mastio Value Map for four consecutive years due to administrative and commercial challenges, not operational execution.

The introduction of a new pricing platform, a dedicated website, and in-house billing should help narrow that gap and drive yield and market-share improvements over time.

JPMorgan estimates that stand-alone costs will add roughly $100 million in 2026 and about $150 million in 2027, reflecting duplicated transition fees and technology outlays that are expected to taper off beginning in the second half of 2027.

The $160 target implies 2028 earnings of $6.20 per share and a 26x multiple -- a discount to peers Old Dominion, XPO, and Saia that JPMorgan believes will shrink as FedEx Freight delivers on its strategy.
