U.S. equity futures showed a mixed edge on Sunday evening as market participants assessed the likelihood of tighter Federal Reserve policy following an August jobs report that surpassed estimates, with trading volumes expected to stay light heading into Monday’s Labor Day holiday.

S&P 500 futures held steady at 7,720.00 points, while Nasdaq 100 futures advanced 0.1% to 29,589.25 points as of 22:09 ET (02:09 GMT). Dow Jones futures were 0.3% lower at 53,292.00 points.

The price action came on the heels of a sluggish Friday session, during which investors revisited their expectations for U.S. interest rates after the employment release.

According to the U.S. Labor Department’s Friday report, nonfarm payrolls rose by 162,000 in August—almost triple the 56,000 advance economists had anticipated.

The unemployment rate remained at 4.1%, and the labor-force participation rate climbed to 61.6%. In addition, payroll figures for June and July were revised upward by a total of 55,000.

The data reinforced the view that the Federal Reserve might implement a rate increase at its September 15–16 meeting, unwinding some of the easing bets that had buoyed equities in recent weeks.

By Sunday evening, interest-rate futures were pricing in approximately a 60% chance of a 25-basis-point move, versus about 49% ahead of the jobs figures, based on CME FedWatch data.

Major Wall Street benchmarks closed lower on Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipping 0.5%, the S&P 500 dropping 0.4%, and the NASDAQ Composite retreating 0.3%.

Technology and semiconductor names proved comparatively resilient, whereas consumer discretionary issues lagged.

Attention now shifts to inflation data scheduled for later in the week, which could offer additional guidance on the Fed’s policy trajectory. Friday’s consumer price report, together with the producer price index, may be especially consequential, given officials’ repeated emphasis on inflation as the key driver for the September rate decision.

U.S. cash equity markets are closed Monday for Labor Day and will reopen for normal trading on Tuesday. With the shortened session, liquidity conditions may be constrained, making markets especially reactive to fluctuations in Treasury yields, oil prices, and shifts in Fed policy expectations.
