On Wednesday, Sept. 9, AI music startup Suno unveiled a new suite of AI models created in collaboration with record labels Warner Music Group and BMG. The tools allow users to generate original music influenced by the licensed repertoire of participating artists.

This rollout comes amid heightened scrutiny of AI music generators such as Suno and Udio, as artists worry about the uncompensated use of their work, while streaming services like Deezer and Spotify strive to improve transparency around AI-generated tracks.

Last year, Udio resolved copyright lawsuits brought by Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, while Suno settled a copyright case with Warner Music and signed licensing agreements.

Suno announced that its flagship v6 model and the experimental v6-Wild variant will be available to both Pro and Premier tier subscribers. The v6 model delivers precise music generation for defined creative goals, whereas v6-Wild is oriented toward exploration and fresh ideas.

The v6-mini version will be free for all users, and Suno anticipates it will provide "better, faster results than any free model on any music creation platform."

Suno CEO Mikey Shulman commented, "We believe this is a blueprint for how AI and the music industry can strengthen one another and build entirely new product experiences for artists, fans, and the broader music community."

Last year, Suno said that its new models would replace earlier versions, moving the entire platform to the v6 generation.

The startup, which charges $8 per month for Pro and $24 per month for Premier subscriptions in the U.S., recently raised more than $400 million in a funding round that put its valuation at $5.4 billion.

Shulman, who co-founded Suno in 2022, added, "What comes next is a new kind of product we’re developing: opt-in experiences built around individual artists, where artists can choose to participate and get paid when they do."

Swedish streaming giant Spotify is also developing an AI-powered remixing tool that would allow users to create new versions of licensed music and share them with fans while retaining the content within the platform.
