U.S. Stocks End Lower; Dow Falls 1.17%

U.S. equities finished in negative territory on Tuesday, with losses concentrated in the Healthcare, Consumer Services, and Financials sectors pulling shares lower.

At the closing bell on the NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.17%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.58%, and the NASDAQ Composite dropped 0.32%.

Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) posted the strongest gain on the Dow, rising 1.05%, or 8.54 points, to close at 822.48. UnitedHealth Group (NYSE:UNH) advanced 0.93%, or 3.70 points, to finish at 400.84, while Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) gained 0.67%, or 1.40 points, to 210.00 in late trading.

Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) was the Dow's worst performer, tumbling 10.08%, or 44.06 points, to 393.17 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) lost 3.86%, or 10.01 points, to end at 249.22, and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) slid 2.29%, or 7.35 points, to 313.70.

Leading the S&P 500 higher, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) surged 9.05% to 104.47. Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) climbed 7.78% to settle at 56.05, and Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) gained 7.56% to close at 165.96.

Howmet Aerospace Inc (NYSE:HWM) paced the S&P 500 decliners, falling 10.70% to 231.53 in late trade. Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) dropped 10.08% to settle at 393.17, while Stryker Corporation (NYSE:SYK) declined 8.81% to close at 276.43.

On the NASDAQ Composite, GT Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:GTBP) skyrocketed 2,074.27% to 5.24. Cytosorbents Crp (NASDAQ:CTSO) advanced 1,857.14% to settle at 6.85, and BioRestorative Therapies Inc (NASDAQ:BRTX) jumped 1,793.92% to close at 2.80.

Among the NASDAQ's worst performers, Lianhe Sowell Int Group (NASDAQ:LHSW) plunged 70.67% to 1.32 in late trading. Focus Universal Inc (NASDAQ:FCUV) dropped 65.24% to 5.91, and ReTo Eco-Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:RETO) fell 49.41% to close at 0.54.

Market breadth was negative, with declining stocks outpacing advancers on the New York Stock Exchange by 1,775 to 938, while 90 issues ended unchanged. On the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2,181 stocks fell and 1,261 advanced, with 171 closing unchanged.

Stryker Corporation (NYSE:SYK) slid 8.81%, or 26.70, to 276.43, reaching a 52-week low. GT Biopharma Inc (NASDAQ:GTBP) rose 2,074.27%, or 5.00, to 5.24, placing shares at 5-year lows. Lianhe Sowell Int Group (NASDAQ:LHSW) fell 70.67%, or 3.18, to 1.32, marking an all-time low. BioRestorative Therapies Inc (NASDAQ:BRTX) advanced 1,793.92%, or 2.66, to 2.80, also touching all-time lows. ReTo Eco-Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:RETO) declined 49.41%, or 0.52, to 0.54, setting an all-time low.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which gauges implied volatility for S&P 500 options, rose 2.81% to 15.73.

December-delivery gold futures dropped 1.65%, or $74.05, to $4,402.55 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities, October crude oil gained 3.03%, or $2.77, to reach $94.25 a barrel, while November Brent crude rose 2.40%, or $2.33, to trade at $99.33 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged at 1.16 (0.00%), while USD/JPY fell 0.23% to 154.00.

The U.S. Dollar Index Futures declined 0.30% to 98.85.
